Listening as breath /
This edition of The Listening Academy is offered as a form of retreat, where we may take a breath. Taking a breath works at assuaging situations of panic, bringing air into the lungs and calming anxiety – it is a remedy and a tactic for contending with heightened states of fright and flight. As Deb Dana suggests in her work on polyvagal theory, breath helps in reconnecting with the body. Such reconnection by way of breath is also found by way of listening, a listening that turns inward to attend to one’s body and all that it carries or is burdened by. To listen is to take a breath, anchoring oneself by way of slower rhythms and the pace of a listening-breath. These are remedies and tactics that work against the strain and stress of contemporary life, that contend with what is carried, to find in the folds of the body the stories and voices that may help in keeping connected. Listening keeps us in touch with the body in the body, the embodied intelligences passed down across generations, held in the blood and bone, and that guide us in knowing how to live well. To take a breath is to draw upon that knowledge.
The Listening Academy Hong Kong brings together artists, performers, researchers, organizers and curators to explore listening as breath, and in what ways we can keep breathing well against the necropolitical realities today. This includes a soft program of intimate presentations, discussions and public encounters, moving from artist-run spaces and apartments to walks in the city as well as creative workshops on questions of air, breathing practices, philosophies of respiration, and translocality. We’re interested to elaborate ways of listening-breathing, testing out tactics together.
The Listening Academy is an independent research academy
focusing on listening as a philosophical, artistic, social and somatic issue.

Here, we seek the present. We have been nurtured and challenged by the seas. We have gained and lost by way of how tides move. Listening remains one of our best teachers. It shows us it is not the will to produce, possess, and transact that defines us, but rather, the turns we can still make despite being stalled, as Susan Stryker proposes, that matter.
At soundpocket, as we learn to listen and listen to learn, we also experience togetherness as impermanent, a quality that sharpens rather than dampens our gratitude for artists who strive to keep differences alive. May learning together be the rippling that moves us and moves through us.

Programme Details
:: On the Day of the Summer Solstice ::
Law Yuk-mui (with Kwong Wing-ka)
River Indus was the former English name of Ng Tung River in the northeast New Territories, Hong Kong. Together with River Jhelum, River Sutlej and River Beas, they form a mirror image of the Indus waters. Serendipity is never truly accidental; the hypothesis that the rivers were named by surveyors from the British Indian Army inspires geographic imaginations between them.
When our sentiments for the foreign land and the hometown are intertwined, is it still possible to find a path from our body cells to our memories? Was it the summer solstice in 2013? Or the summer solstice in 2021?

:: Notating the Birds of Yuen Po Street ::
Catherine Clover
The complex soaring songs of songbirds captivate and immerse listeners, yet the caged bird trade is decimating populations in the wild and in South East Asia the bird trade is increasing. Caged birds sing more loudly and more frequently than birds in the wild and it is a rich but troubling listening experience. How might notating the songs of the birds through writing/drawing/mark-making add to our listening experience? What might attentive listening and notating offer in terms of the ethical dilemma of caging birds for their songs?
Catherine Clover

:: Hyper-listening, Co-listening: A Non-Western Intervention into Sound Studies ::
Budhaditya Chattopadhyay
I investigate how the mindful, subjective, and collaborative aspects of “hyper-listening” and “co-listening” help focus on the listener’s contemplation and capacity for reciprocity in regard to their situational contexts. Hyper-listening and co-listening operate as a set of individual and collective exercises and experiments in sonic medi(t)ation. They encourage listening to self and others without instantaneous judgments, thereby challenging the Western modernist idea of listening as immediate meaning-making.
Budhaditya Chattopadhyay

:: Slow Listening, Slow Breathing # 1: Towards an Amicable End ::
Budhaditya Chattopadhyay
Slow listening, slow breathing is a series of live sonic sharings to nurture a meditative and regenerative engagement with a critical topic in a gathering. The first act engages with the themes of environmental crisis and coping strategies to climate migrations. The audience/co-listeners are invited into an exercise of slow listening and slow breathing to tap into Fatalism, a much-practiced strand of philosophy in the Global Souths, and a coping mechanism of people in South Asia in face of colonialism, imperialism, economic exploitation, and their outcomes in famine and poverty.
Budhaditya Chattopadhyay
