On and off, I heard from friends who generously responded to the earlier entries of my quarantine diaries.
Michael Leung — Eames, from the very local to the infinite view
Michael responded to my first quarantine diary and the two short films I shared in it and wrote:
“I couldn’t help but think about the Zoom boxes on your screen, within the box that you’re in.”
And he quoted:
Powers of Ten (1977)
Charles & Ray Eames, Eames Office
“Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only as a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.“

Zach McLane recommends William Kentridge’s “The Long Minute”:
Zach was imagining a potential curatorial project for a screening series…
“I loved both of the short films that you shared in the post [01] and it made me wonder what films could come together into a screening of films on confinement or quarantine.
I was reminded of William Kentridge’s series “The Long Minute” that he made at the beginning of lockdown in May of 2020. It’s a series of 1-minute short films and this one, PRISONER IN THE BOOK, feels in good company with Hé, te! [quarantine diary 01] and La Cabina [quarantine diary 01].”

“This has been for me a very quiet time, with many weeks of not travelling, of simply working in the studio. I’m conscious of being particularly fortunate, in the circumstances, of having a studio in the garden as I’m very aware of many other artists who can’t actually get into their studios because they are in different areas to where they live; and of the difference of being an artist who can keep at work compared with dancers, actors and some musicians for whom it is impossible to even practice their métier, let alone get paid for it, because they don’t have access to dance studios, rehearsal spaces and so on.”
– Kentridge, with reference to The Centre for the Less Good Idea in downtown Johannesburg –
1, And this you say is my life; 2, Chair waltz; 3, Counting seconds;
4, Hold; 5, Struggle for a good hear;
