私己事 A Story of One's Own

Co-directed by Kimburley Choi and Wong Fei-pang, A Story of One's Own is an interactive video installation based on life history interviews with 43 older Hong Kong women who recounted their lived experiences between 1950s and 2010s. These life stories are narrated and re-enacted by the same actress who performed as five fictitious characters. This project explores the relationships between representation and lived experiences, highlights the performative nature of oral storytelling, problematizes memory as a creative intervention of experiences, and visualizes selfhood as a rhizomatic story with different voices. It can be understood as a reflexive experiment on the production of visual ethnographic knowledge. The installation will be on view at Floating Projects from 3 to 19 December 2022, accompanied by a video forum on 10 December 2022. In this video forum, the directors Dr. Kimburley Choi and Mr. Wong Fei Pang will reflect on their research and creation process of recounting the older women’s life experiences and subjective evaluations in contemporary Hong Kong. They will discuss the performative nature of oral storytelling in the installation, and how it visualises selfhood as a rhizomatic story with different voices, knowledge as situated and “truths” as multiple and partial. It aims to shed light on social research as arts-based narrative inquiry. The forum will be held at Floating Projects on 10 December 2022 (Saturday) at 3:30-5:30 p.m. The event will be moderated by Dr. Linda Lai and conducted in Cantonese. Directors Dr. Kimburley Choi is Associate Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, and an interdisciplinary scholar focusing on media representations and everyday life practices. As a scholar conducting research on the continuity and changes of cultural experiences, Choi's research interests are wide-ranging and lie at the creative intersection of cultural studies, sociology, and media studies. Mr. Wong Fei Pang is PhD candidate in School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. He works as an independent filmmaker and as cinematographer in various commercial films. He co-founded Ground Up Film Society in 2014, a non-profit film organisation which aims to raise public awareness on the social and artistic value of moving image by initiating film festivals, productions and education programs.
